Enjoying the sun while your hair isn’t? After a summer of fun, your locks might be feeling a bit lifeless thanks to months of exposure to chlorine, salt and sunscreen. These simple tips will nourish and refresh dry hair for fall.
1. Clarify your locks
First things first, you need to remove any product buildup and clarify your hair. To get great volume and shine you need to get rid of all the gunk that’s weighing down your strands. Every product in the Garnier® Whole Blends™ line smells amazing but the Refreshing Shampoo with Green Apple & Green Tea Extracts is my favorite. The smell is clean and fresh, perfect for a deep cleanse that restores shine.
Make sure to spend a few extra minutes to massage your scalp as you shampoo. This helps to clean out the follicles and stimulate new growth.
2. Hydrate hair overnight
Next, it’s time to deal with parched, dry hair. Sun and salt can take their toll, but if you think you don’t have time for a hair mask, think again. One of the best times to apply a hair mask is while you sleep. Apply a mask weekly to make dry, damaged hair seriously soft and smooth. Opt for a leave-in formula with nourishing honey, like the Garnier® Whole Blends™ Honey Treasures Repairing Mask. Apply the mask to wet hair, combing through the strands. Sleep with a towel on your pillow to avoid waking up to a ginormous mess.
3. Up your intake of healthy hair foods
You may have noticed that your hair is harder to tame in the winter, when your fresh fruit and vegetable intake is considerably lower than in summer. There are other factors involved, of course, but certain foods are better for your hair than others, and some even help it grow or get thicker. Start by including lots of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. This helps strengthen the hair follicle and contributes to its overall moisture. Think fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel), flaxseed, acai and hemp oil.
And as the weather turns cooler, add more pumpkin to your diet. The seasonal super food contains vitamin A, which is responsible for the sebum production. This acts as a natural conditioner for hair and promotes a healthy scalp. The lack of sebum leads to an unpleasantly dry, itchy scalp.
4. Fight fall frizz
Frizzy hair is a year round nightmare, but a summer of humidity makes it worse! Other factors include brushing dry hair, blow-drying, chlorinated water and hair products. The cuticle layers of each hair strand need moisture in order to lay flat and smooth, and you can give them a push by using Garnier® Whole Blends™ Coconut Oil & Cocoa Butter Extracts Leave-In Conditioner to tame frizzy hair and add shine. Plus, the beachy fragrance of coconut oil and cocoa butter will make you feel like summer never ended!
