This easy felt heart pencil topper is the perfect kid craft for Valentine’s day – kiddos will love making them and have even more fun giving them to friends.
I love to have craft projects at my disposal that both of my kids can get involved with. The great thing with this craft is you can make the heart pencil topper as simple or as complicated as you like. Your toddler will enjoy sticking decorations on the heart, and older children will be able to complete the craft without assistance and practice some slightly more complex skills such as sewing.
- felt scraps in red and white
- seed beads (or other decorative items such as glitter, sequins or glitter glue)
- pipe cleaner
- heart shaped cookie cutters
- optional items: needle, thread and stuffing
Heart Pencil Topper Instructions
Draw around a heart-shaped cookie cutter twice on red felt. Then use a smaller cookie cutter to trace one heart onto white felt.
Cut out the hearts as well as two thin strips of felt.
Place the small heart-shaped cookie cutter on top of one of the red hearts and fill the center with glue. This will leave a heart shaped patch of glue.
Sprinkle seed beads, sequins or glitter onto the glue. Set aside to dry
Coil a strip of red felt and add a dot of glue to secure the end. Pinch one end to create a teardrop shape. Repeat with second strip of red felt and glue the two teardrops together to make a quilled heart shape!
Glue the small white heart on top of the second red heart and add the quilled red heart on top of the white heart. Set aside to dry
Glue the two red hearts together with the pipe cleaner in the middle.
Coil the pipe cleaner around the top of a pencil.
- Use stitches, to decorate and to sew together the hearts
- Add a small amount of stuffing to pad out the heart
- Try cutting different shapes, like stars!
