As much as I love candles, the thought of lighting one when it’s 100 degrees outside is too much. Same for stove simmers – I don’t really want to add the extra heat and moisture during hot, humid summer months. So while I’m on candle and pot simmer hiatus for the summer, here are some simple, natural ways to make your home smell like summer.
5 Ways To Scent Your Home for Summer
1. Make summery room spray
Room sprays are so easy to DIY. Fill a spray bottle with 1 cup of distilled water and add a dozen drops of your favorite essential oil. Citrus and lavender are my faves for summer. Or mix 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of vodka to make the scent last longer. Mist your sheets or in the air to make any room feel summery.
2. Hang a solid fragrance
Not only are these wax sachets pretty to look at, but the smell is perfect for summer (not too much, not too little). This honeysuckle scent sounds perfect!
3. Scent your TP
You know the ubiquitous candle in the bathroom? Replace it in summer with a few drops of essential oil inside the toilet paper roll. Sweet orange, lemongrass or clary sage freshen the bathroom nicely.
4. Make a fresh herb bouquet
If you have herbs plants that are, well, growing like weeds use the clippings to add a fresh scent to the fridge or kitchen. I store my basil plant cuttings in a class of water, and the smell is divine. Change out water daily.
5. Use fresh coffee grounds
If you’re a coffee fan, you can create a bit of a Starbucks feel at home with coffee grounds. Fill a small bowl with fresh or used grounds and leave it on the counter for a coffeehouse aroma. And if you’ve let CSA produce go bad in the refrigerator you can eliminate foul odors by leaving coffee grounds in the fridge overnight.
