The smells of Christmas are perfect for cozying up indoors on a crisp winter day. For Christmas diffuser blends, I like to have minty, woodsy, spicy, and warming aromas, as well as citrus and anything else in between!
Christmas Essential Oils
Candles often rely on artificial fragrances to recreate the aroma of the outdoors, and aside from containing potentially toxic ingredients, many times they don’t smell like the real thing. This is where essential oils shine—not only are they completely natural, but they also smell like the real thing because they are the real thing!
Just like the scents of fall, this time of year is perfect for experimenting with different blends and aromas. Scents of cranberry, orange, mint, pine, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg mingle together to create aromas that are truly unique to this time of year. Plus, you always need a good potent blend to help fight germs.
While you're free to choose any oils you like, some of my favorites are:
Balsam Fir
Nothing screams Christmas quite like the smell of balsam fir. But aside from the fun, festive scent, it's often used to promote respiratory health and soothe tired and achy muscles.
Cinnamon
Cinnamon essential oil blends well with other spicy scents like nutmeg, ginger and clove to make the ultimate warming winter scent.
Bergamot
Bergamot is a warm and woodsy scent that also has antibacterial and antiviral properties.
Cedarwood
Much like bergamot, cedarwood is another woodsy scent with medicinal properties. I love combining it with something lighter and punchier such as Sweet Orange or Lemonbalm to give it some much-needed balance.
Peppermint
Light and crisp, peppermint is synonymous with the holidays. When diffused in the air it has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. It also soothes the digestive tract and brightens the mood.
Frankincense
Last but not least, frankincense reduces feelings of anxiety and stimulates the immune system (which may be very helpful this time of year).
Whip up this room spray trio and give it as a gift to your besties or simply stash them around the house and spray whenever you need a quick holiday pick-me-up.
18 Essential Oil Christmas Diffuser Blends
Here are some of my favorite blends to use around the holidays. These blends are perfect for diffusing while you’re enjoying hot cocoa, baking cookies, sitting in front of a fire, and opening presents!
1. Candy Cane Blend
While I do love the aroma of peppermint, I felt like it needed just a little something extra to elevate it so that it smells more like a candy cane—spearmint! The sweetness of spearmint combined with peppermint really kicks this minty blend up a notch, and the addition of vanilla completely seals the deal.
—4 drops peppermint essential oil
—4 drops spearmint essential oil
—1-2 drops vanilla essential oil
2. Christmas Tree Blend
One of my very favorite aromas during the winter is the smell of Christmas trees. I love the way a forest smells on a brisk winter day, so I enjoy bringing that aroma into my home.
—4 drops pine essential oil
—4 drops cedarwood essential oil
—2 drops orange essential oil
3. Sugar Cookie Blend
Around Christmas, the aroma of baked goods more often permeates our home. This is the time of year that I bake treasured family recipes for family and friends. And most of the time, I put my own spin on the recipes—often by adding cinnamon to the mix.
—4 drops vanilla essential oil
—3 drops orange essential oil
—1 drop nutmeg essential oil
—1 drop cinnamon essential oil
4. Snowy Day Blend
I love the smell of a crisp winter day, don’t you? There’s just something so invigorating about breathing in a deep lungful of the brisk air around Christmastime. Often, there’s a faint aroma of wood smoke or pine, and it totally refreshes the mind and body.
—4 drops pine essential oil
—2 drops cedarwood essential oil
—1 drop clove essential oil
5. Peppermint Latte Blend
Just like pumpkin spice indicates the emergence of fall, peppermint is representative of the advent of winter. Peppermint lattes and peppermint cocoa are the drinks of the season. Coffee essential oil is one of our favorites, and this decadent diffuser blend recipe smells just like the seasonal latte:
—5 drops coffee essential oil
—3 drops vanilla essential oil
—2 drops peppermint essential oil
6. Boughs of Holly Blend
There’s just something so invigorating about breathing in a deep lungful of the brisk air around Christmastime. This blend brings in frankincense and myrrh, two scents with a long history with Christmas.
—2 drops frankincense essential oil
—2 drops myrrh essential oil
—3 drops orange essential oil
—2 drops cedarwood essential oil
7. Hot Cocoa Blend
Besides tea, hot cocoa is my family’s favorite drink for the winter season. A nice creamy cup of hot chocolate really hits the spot on cold winter days, and we indulge in the rich treat a few times throughout the winter.
However, even on days when we’re not drinking hot cocoa, I still like to have the aroma wafting throughout the house because it just smells so good. So here’s my recipe for a diffuser blend that smells like hot cocoa:
—5 drops chocolate essential oil
—4 drops vanilla essential oil
—1 drop coffee or peppermint essential oil
8. Winter Spice Blend
Have you ever simmered spices, herbs, and fruit on your stove to make your house smell amazing? I absolutely love the scent of oranges, cranberries, cinnamon, and herbs when they’ve been simmering for hours, but I don’t always have all the ingredients on hand to do it.
That’s when I use essential oils to recreate the aroma. Here’s a great recipe to use that’s remarkably similar:
—4 drops orange essential oil
—2 drops black pepper essential oil
—2 drops pine or rosemary essential oil
—1 drop anise essential oil
—1 drop cinnamon essential oil
9. A Minty Christmas Blend
Peppermint permeates our teas, our baked goods, and even our chapstick and sugar scrubs during Christmas! And with essential oils, you can recreate these aromas in your home at a moment’s notice.
—2 drops eucalyptus essential oil
—3 drops peppermint essential oil
—2 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
10. Winter Germ Blend
I like to have a potent antimicrobial blend to diffuse during the winter months. If somebody in the house is feeling run down or we’ve been exposed to an illness, I diffuse this blend throughout the main living areas of the home.
—5 drops lemon essential oil
—2 drops cinnamon essential oil
—1 drop oregano essential oil
—1 drop thyme essential oil
11. Wintertime Relaxation Blend
Although the pace seems to be slower for me during the winter, the holidays can be crazy busy! Sometimes, I still need a little help winding down at the end of my day—especially as it gets closer to Christmas.
Drinking a hot cup of tea (decaf, of course), wrapping up in a blanket, and diffusing a relaxing essential oil blend can be a game changer if I’m overstimulated.
—4 drops orange essential oil
—3 drops cedarwood essential oil
—2 drops vanilla essential oil
—1 drop lavender essential oil
12. Christmas Wreath Blend
This combines several traditional holiday aromas into one delectable blend. It reminds me of Christmas, and it’s a great one to use to help get your home ready for the festivities! I promise it’ll make your home smell awesome!
—1 drop spearmint essential oil
—2 drops peppermint essential oil
—3 drops orange essential oil
—4–5 drops balsam fir essential oil
13. Christmas Sweater Season Blend
Who doesn't love curling up in a cozy sweater by the fire? This blend brings brisk winter air indoors—without the freezing temperatures!

—3 drops juniper berry essential oil
—2 drops clary sage essential oil
14. Sugared Citrus Peel Blend
Making homemade sugared citrus peel candy is a time-honored holiday tradition for many families. The fresh aroma of citrus combined with warmed sugar creates a wonderful fragrance during this time of year.
Here’s a great recipe that’s reminiscent of that aroma:

—3 drops green mandarin essential oil
—2 drops vanilla essential oil
—2 drops Peru balsam essential oil
15. Christmas Cookie Blend

—2 drops cinnamon bark essential oil
—1 drop bergamot essential oil
—3 drops lemon essential oil
