I love today’s DIY! It is easy and fun, with just the right amount of kitsch. Did I mention it is very inexpensive? Yup! It has all the right ingredients for a good DIY.
Although I labeled this as a kid’s necklace, I actually like it as adult necklace, too. I’ve been wearing mine – looks great layered with bronze and brass necklaces. Keep reading to see the easy instructions.
You can get your supplies at your local Dollar Tree. I picked up a pack of kid’s party favor compasses (6 total). I wasn’t sure what my plan was but they are just so cute! Do they work? Of course not, they are 6 for $1! They are cute nonetheless and most of them do spin a little. You will also need a paper clip and some kind of chain or ribbon.
If you are doing this with your kiddos, I suggest letting them pick their paperclip and compass colors. You do the hot-gluing (obviously). I made a hot glue mess on this one. If you want it to look prettier, you could cover the hot glue with a piece of fabric or ribbon. I added a jump ring to hang my chain from the paper clip. If you don’t have a jump ring, that’s okay. You could just string your chain through the clip.
That’s it! So easy, right? You could do this as party favors for boys or girls. Or you know, yourself. :) Have fun!

What a great idea. I would love for you to stop by My Dream Canvas. Have a super weekend.
I love this idea – certainly off to make myself one!
Yay! Would love to see how it turns out! You can’t beat the price, right? :)
I love that necklace I’m gonna have to make some for my cousins! too cute!
Awesome, have fun & let me know how it turns out!
Way cute! We will definitely feature it on Dollar Store Crafts next week!
Thanks, Heather! I thought you might like it. Thanks for the feature!
chains from old thrift store necklaces would work perfectly too… maybe I”ll have to try it out w/ those things I dont know what to do with. Anyway, I LOVE this! I’d most def wear this as an adult too & certainly love the price/simplicity of it. Way to go cutie Katie!
Thanks, Dus!
What a creative and clever use of an inexpensive item! I am going to make a trip to the Dollar Tree!
Thanks Sara! There are so many fun things to find at the Dollar Store – it’s a great place to go for inspiration!
I love the Dollar Tree, Sara! Even if your vision for something doesn’t work out – you aren’t out too much money.
This is why I will never have a DIY blog. I would never see compasses at the dollar store and think I could do something cute with them. What a fun idea!
So true! I couldn’t have a food blog for the same reason – I am not the person who can go to the market, buy a few random things and come home to whip up a fabulous meal. That skill amazes me!
This looks easy enough, will have to tour the Dollar Store this weekend :)
Now you’ll go with me?! We’ll have to make one of these for the girls!
This is adorable! My daughter would absolutely love this and think she was the coolest kid in school– plus she’s been bugging me to take her to the dollar store so she can get some cotton candy. lol. I smell a trip tomorrow!
I don’t think I’ve ever gotten cotton candy there – it might be dangerous for me to take Caroline, a trip to Target now ALWAYS includes popcorn :)
what a cute project!! i love the use of the paper clip on the back
Thanks Meg! A paperclip is so easy – who would’ve thought, right? Have a great weekend!
Thanks, Meg! Would you believe it took me a long time to think of the paperclip solution? Now it seems so obvious!
such a cool and simple idea! even i believe i can make on of these necklaces :)
Thanks Brooklyn! Definitely check out your Dollar Store – so many fun ideas there!
My family has an annual camping trip every September. We are so making these! Thanks for the idea.
I can’t wait for my kids to get old enough for a family camping trip! Sounds so fun, have a great time!
