It’s finally starting to feel like fall! Temps don’t get too arctic in Nashville (thank goodness), but we are finally having chilly mornings and cool evenings. While growing up, our house had a wood stove, and there’s nothing better to get you feeling warm and cozy. We used to run into the room on freezing mornings and huddle together in front of it while eating breakfast. Somehow in my memory, it feels like it was subzero weather!
If you know someone with a fireplace—or even a backyard chiminea—they will love these spice and herb fire starter packages. They take 5 minutes to make and smell amazing. A perfect holiday hostess gift!
Supplies needed:
- Coffee filters (the flat, triangular kind)
- Embroidery thread and needle
- Dried orange and apple peels
- Cloves
- Cinnamon sticks
- Sprigs of fresh rosemary
- Lavender
Stuff the coffee filters with a small handful of the spice mixture—not too much! Thread the needle, and sew the top opening closed. It’s that simple!
The scent of winter spices will definitely get you into the holiday spirit. It’s the perfect excuse to make a fire and roast marshmallows!

What size filter is used?
Yum! I can almost smell it now! I recently moved into a new apartment in a new city and one of the big selling points for me was that the space had a real fireplace. Since the move in, the need to get settled and do silly things like “work” or “study” seems to have distracted me from my lovely fireplace but I think I just found the perfect excuse to test it out. Thanks!
Could you use lavender oil?
Probably!
What a fun project! I just taught my daughter how to sew for the first time while we made these! Now she is making more to give as Christmas gifts. Thanks for a great idea.
Lovely idea !
I am from western Ky, It is good to see some one close to home . What part of Nashville? Going to make some of these. I know they will smell wonderful
I can’t wait to put this together. I’ve become a herb collecting freak these past few months, and since I have a fireplace, this will be the next project on my list! I also noticed you mentioned Nashville -it has been 10 years since I moved away from there to California, but absolutely LOVED the fall in Nashville -incredible colors everywhere!! Thanks again for the cool project!!
THis is a great idea, let’s try this one weekend, bet it would smell really good!
How clever is this!! I love this, Stephanie!!
Maybe this is a stupid question, but could you use this with gas fireplaces?
What a brilliant idea. I bet they smell amazing. Saving this one away for winter!
Do you think we can put it in the pillow case?
