Cheers to Friday! I rarely say this because every week is crazy ’round these parts – but this week was cray-zay. We started the week prepping for Caroline’s first day of kindergarten (what?!) and finished the week with a trip to the ER. Never a dull moment! But Henry is okay – bit of a wound from crashing into his sister’s head.
So who else is ready for a cocktail to welcome the weekend? I think coming up with this recipe might have been the highlight of my week. Ok, cute 1st day of school photos come first! But these cherries were a close second. In the midst of a recent cherry binge I fondly recalled the most awesome cocktail with bourbon soaked cherries that I used to enjoy (a little too much) an embarrassing number of years ago. Soon there was bourbon involved with that cherry binge!
And if you think cherries are awesome, just wait until you make cherry syrup. Oh my goodness. It’s hard to even describe just how much better it tastes than the blechy sweetness of maraschino cherries. Not only is this amazing in a cocktail but it would also be super yummy with sparkling water or lemonade. And I can’t believe I didn’t try to make a homemade cherry cola!
Bourbon Old Fashioned
- 1/4 cup bourbon
- 2 tablespoons cherry syrup and a couple of cherries from making the syrup
- 1 dash orange bitters or club soda
- cherry for garnish
In a saucepan combine one cup pitted cherries with 1 cup water and 3/4 cup sugar. Mash the cherries up a bit. Then simmer on low until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat, mash things together a bit more and let mixture sit until cooled. Strain and keep solids for garnish!
Muddle 2-3 cherries in a shaker and then add bourbon, cherry syrup and bitters. Fill with ice and give it a good shake. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with cherry.1
