Can we just go ahead and admit that smoothies are the best thing since sliced bread? I might even go so far as to say theyโre the perfect meal: healthy, delicious, fuss-free and easy to eat on the go. Heck, if it werenโt for my husband who requires โreal foodโ once in a while, we would eat smoothies for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
But despite my obsession, smoothies can be notoriously high maintenance. Between the gathering, washing and chopping (every. single. time.) they can get tiresome real fast. But thatโs where smoothie bombs come in. These pre-portioned smoothie boosters drastically cut down on prep time. And they add a dose of superfood nutrition to your smoothie. Simply toss โem in a blender with a little fruit and some water and blend.
Homemade Smoothie Bombs
You can make smoothie bombs with pretty much anything: coconut oil, hemp seeds, chlorella, cacao, you name it. I highly recommend playing around with flavors and switching things up to make sure youโre always getting different nutrients in your diet. This berry blend is one of my all-time favorites. Itโs packed with superfoods like goji and acai berries, as well as low-sugar raspberries, blackberries and blueberries. I also add some coconut and flax seeds for additional vitamins, antioxidants and healthy fats.
Hereโs how it works.
Goji Berries
Goji berries maintain consistent blood sugar, detoxify the liver, and provide a plethora of beneficial antioxidants that help protect eyes and skin.
Acai Berries
Acai berries have antioxidants that help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. Theyโre also said to help guard against diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
Raspberries, blackberries and blueberries
Just one cup of berries has 3 grams of fiber, more lycopene than a tomato and more vitamin C than a medium orange. They’re also an excellent source of fiber, folate and potassium.
Flax seeds
Flax seeds are chock full of omega-3 essential fatty acids, which have been shown to have heart-healthy effects.
Coconut
Coconut can be considered a complete food as it’s incredibly rich in vitamins, minerals, and calories. Itโs also a good source of lauric acid, the most important saturated fat provided by coconuts.
Because these are so nutrient-dense, you might notice a decrease in cravings for unhealthy foods. Smoothie bombs have enough vitamins and minerals to help correct nutritional deficiencies that cause cravings. Especially if you eat them at breakfast, your body is less likely to try and fill in the gaps with unhealthy, calorie-rich junk foods when youโre tired or depleted.
Berry Smoothie Bombs
Equipment
- Blender
- Ice cube tray
Ingredients
- 1 cup frozen mixed berries
- ยผ cup goji berry powder
- ยผ cup acai berry powder
- ยผ organic coconut flakes
- 1 tablespoon flax seeds
- 1 ยฝ cups water or juice
Instructions
- Combine everything in a blender or food processor and puree until smooth. To get the different colors like I did, simply play around with the ratio of berries. More acai powder will make darker smoothie bombs, while more goji powder will make lighter smoothie bombs.
- Pour the mixture in an ice cube tray and place it in the freezer for several hours or overnight.
- Add 3 or 4 bombs to your next smoothie and blend as usual.
