Seasonal transitions can be hard on our immune systems, energy levels, and skin. Seriously, I can't be the only one who wants to sleep 24/7 once the weather cools down!
Changing routines and diets—so long, endless supply of farmers market veggies; hello, hearty casseroles—can make us feel sluggish or simply "off." These seven fresh, healthy juice recipes for fall feature ingredients, like carrots, cucumber, ginger, apple, parsley, and lemon, that help keep your skin glowing and hydrated and your circulatory and immune systems in tip-top shape.
7 Green Juices for Fall
While your desire for berry-based drinks may be tapering off, the following 7 drinks contain veggies and fruits that are readily available throughout the fall season. These 7 recipes can help you save your frozen fruit stockpile for when you really need it—after the holidays. New to juicing? You might want to start with Juicing 101.
1. Carrot Blast Juice
Carrots provide the majority of the taste and color in this drink. This root vegetable is loaded with antioxidants and several forms of carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A [source].
Celery provides a great source of dietary antioxidants and fiber [source], while cucumber is an anti-inflammatory that removes toxins from the body [source] and, with its high water content, adds the liquid for this drink. Ginger adds a flavor kick, and scientists are exploring another benefit—its role in helping the body fight tumors [source].
- 2 carrots
- 6 stalks celery
- 1 cucumber
- 2-inch piece of ginger
2. Apple Zing Juice
Apples are high in dietary fiber and other compounds that benefit the intestinal microbiome [source]. Phytochemicals called flavonoids present in the peel have been shown to help fight cancer [source] (and so does fiber), so drink one glass of this to keep the doctor away. While most of us don't use lemons to fight scurvy anymore, we should still consume them for their high vitamin C content and anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial capabilities [source].
If you've been on a juice cleanse recently, you won't be surprised by the next ingredient: cayenne. Often used to cleanse and detoxify the body, this spice also improves circulation [source].
As for coconut water, what can't it do? It helps you feel full and thus aids in weight loss; it keeps you regular. Since it is excellent for hydration [source], coconut water eases the symptoms of having too much fun out with the girls.
- 1 apple
- 1 cucumber
- 1 lemon (remove peel and place in a high-quality juicer if you have one—otherwise, use a citrus juicer, or squeeze it into a glass)
- 1-inch piece of ginger
Add to a glass:
- dash of cayenne
- 2 ounces coconut water
3. Green Glory Juice
In addition to the many benefits of apples and lemons, this drink contains Swiss chard, which is extremely high in vitamin K and also contains vitamins A, C, and significant amounts of dietary fiber [source]. Strawberries are delicious, and they’re also nutritious, known for their high vitamin C and folate content and incredible antioxidant ability [source].
- 1 green apple
- 1 bunch Swiss chard
- ½ cup strawberries
- 1 bunch parsley
- 1 lemon (Remove the peel and place in a high-quality juicer if you have one. Otherwise, juice separately using a citrus juicer, or squeeze it into a glass)
4. Carrot Blessings Juice
Parsley is an often-overlooked superfood with potent anti-inflammatories that aid in detoxing the body [source]. Because of its diuretic properties [source], it is thought to reduce bloating, making this drink perfect for post-holiday recovery.
Lemon juice also has detoxification benefits, and all that vitamin C [source] will have your immune system humming (bonus: vitamin C helps your body produce collagen). This juice is the ultimate immune-boosting, body detoxing, free radical fighting elixir.
- 5 carrots
- 1 bunch parsley
- 2 lemons (remove peel and place into a high-quality juicer if you have one—otherwise use a citrus juicer, or squeeze it into glass)
Add all of the ingredients into a juicer. Sweeten with organic raw honey if desired.
5. Digestion 101 Juice
Hydrating celery and cucumber combine with parsley, lemon, and aloe vera juice—all of which help your liver detox from all the extra booze and party food you indulged in this summer.
- 4 celery stalks
- 1 cucumber
- ½ bunch dill
- ½ bunch parsley
- Juice from 2 lemons
- 2 ounces aloe vera juice
Juice the first four ingredients. Combine in a glass with lemon juice and aloe vera juice.
6. Green Beauty Juice
I know for me, without fail every year, early fall is fraught with a need to sleep 10 hours/night, dry skin, and at least a couple of breakouts. This juice is meant to help your body regain balance just in time for the cold season. Dark, leafy greens like kale and spinach are a great way to get your metabolism and blood sugar back on track.
- 3 kale leaves
- ½ cup spinach
- 4 celery stalks
- 5 basil leaves
- 1 cucumber
- Juice from 1 lemon
- Juice from 1 lime
Juice all ingredients except lemon and lime juice. Pour into glasses and mix in lemon and lime juice.
7. Kale Magic Juice
All these changes to our daily routine—and the anxiety over them—can result in issues like insomnia, extra sleepiness, sugar cravings or withdrawal, digestive upset, and skin/hair problems. This simple kale-carrot juice is earthy but has a touch of brightness from the detoxing effects of lemon, parsley, and ginger.
- 4 kale leaves
- 2 carrots
- Handful parsley
- Juice from 1 lemon
- 1-inch piece of ginger
Juice all ingredients except the lemon juice. Pour into a glass and mix in the lemon juice.
