Crystals have made their way into skincare regimens via gua sha and rolling, but you don't always need a special tool to get the benefits of crystal energies. Grab your favorite stones and learn how to boost your energy, glow and self-love with the simple practice of making crystal facial grids.
Crystals and Beauty
Healing crystals have been used for thousands of years in rituals of beauty and adornment and, in more recent centuries, as protective amulets and in healing rituals. In ancient Egypt, the rich blue hue of lapis lazuli was a favorite choice for facial adornment [source] and was often inlaid in masks. The ancient Greeks and Romans adorned themselves with amethyst to help them stay clear-headed and temperate [source]. Today, many people are also choosing to wear crystals and use them around their homes to create energetic shifts in body, mind, and spirit. They are being used in meditation and energy healing rituals, as water infusers, and more recently in skincare via facial grids.
What Is a Crystal Facial Grid?
A crystal facial grid is an assemblage of various crystals chosen for their particular properties and combined in a geometric pattern to create a stronger vibrational frequency. Grids can be created in your home on an altar space, arranged around the perimeter of your walls to amplify and shift the energy of your room, or—in this case—placed in a harmonious composition on your face to help you feel more balanced, energized, or refreshed.
Curious about how you might begin to incorporate crystals into this straightforward and relaxing self-care technique? Here’s what you need to know:
Step 1 | Choose crystals for the energy you want to create.
Each crystal has its own unique structure that vibrates at a particular frequency. The idea is that when we work with crystals, we are looking to synchronize our energy with that of the earth element. They may stimulate productivity and clarity, promote inner peace and relaxation, or even serve to protect your energy. Your intention and objective in terms of what you’re looking to receive from the crystals influences the sort of stones you’ll want to work with.
Before you go about creating your facial grid, you’ll need to decide on the energy you’d like to bring on board. From there, you’ll gather together a grouping of five key stones based on their properties. While we’ve come up with a few suggestions for you here, the combinations are really limitless, so feel free to experiment and choose crystals that speak to you and to create your own unique groupings.
1. For relaxation and calm:
2 rose quartz, 1 angelite, 1 amethyst, 1 lepidolite
These crystals are said to encourage feelings of calm, balance, relaxation, and peace, perfect for any time you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed or could just use a wind-down ritual before bed.
2. For focus and clarity:
2 citrine, 1 pyrite, 1 fluorite, 1 malachite
Best for when a little time-out to recharge is needed, these stones are said to help boost focus and clarity, rational thinking, and productivity.
3. For heart-healing, nurturing, self-love:
2 rose quartz, 1 rhodochrosite, 1 amazonite, 1 rhodonite
There are times when we just need to feel gentle, supportive energy as we work to heal our inner wounds. Used alongside self-massage, Epsom salt baths, and a warm cup of tea, this group of crystals may offer just the right kind of support.
4. For energy, creativity, and passion:
2 carnelian, 1 red jasper, 1 tiger’s eye, 1 yellow jasper
When vitality, inspiration, courage, and passion are what’s on order, these stones can amplify and encourage your ability to harness and shine your most radiant inner alpha.
5. For radiance and glow:
2 jade, 1 shungite, 1 amethyst, 1 rose quartz
We all have those days when we could use an extra bit of TLC for our skin—whether it’s due to a puffy face, dark circles, or just a dull complexion. Some crystals, such as shungite and jade, are said to have properties that may help reduce inflammation, cool the skin, and help with lymphatic drainage. Gua sha and rollers are made of particular crystals for this very reason. Go a little extra by placing your crystals in a cool place before use.
6. For insight, spiritual connection, and intuition:
2 selenite, 1 moonstone, 1 clear quartz, 1 amethyst
When you feel spiritually disconnected, confused, or cut off from your own intuitive wisdom and inner guidance, working with crystals that align with the energies of the aura and higher mind is key. These light and bright crystals will help you tune in, align, and manifest in accordance with your highest self.
7. For grounding and protection:
2 black tourmaline, 1 yellow jasper, 1 smoky quartz, 1 pyrite
Harnessing the stable earth energy of crystals can help us feel more grounded and protected as they work in alignment with the balance of the root chakra, our center of safety, comfort, belonging, and ease. This grid may be helpful when you need to come down to earth and feel more settled and embodied.
Step 2: Prep your crystals.
Before working with your crystals, it’s recommended that you take the time to cleanse and charge them (we like using lunar, smoke, and sound cleansing). Then build a bridge between their frequencies and your own by holding them close to your body and setting an intention. What are you looking to manifest, heal, overcome, encourage, or shift? State this in your mind with clarity.
Step 3: Clear your space and get comfortable.
Like any other self-care ritual, it’s most effective if it feels as if it is loving and honoring. Create a space that feels welcoming and special, maybe drawing curtains and lighting candles, burning incense or essential oils (clary sage, lavender, or cedarwood would be excellent choices for their grounding and relaxing properties), playing relaxing ambient music, or setting up a small altar.
Wear clothing that is soft and comfortable, and arrange a space for yourself to lie down and relax. Soft blankets on the floor and a low pillow or folded blanket are perfect. Eliminate any possible distractions as well.
Step 4: Prepare your grid.
Once you have gathered your crystals, prepped them for use, and cleared your space, it’s time to assemble your facial grid. Lay down and get comfortable, resting your head so that your face is horizontal rather than propped up. Cover yourself in warm blankets or wear layers so that you are optimizing your time to relax and sink in.
Where to put the crystals:
—First, place the two matching stones upon each cheekbone/under eye area.
—Add the second stone upon the third eye space just between your eyebrows
—Add the third stone in the center of your forehead
—Set the last one on the chin
We have suggested that you use the same basic organization for each of the groupings, but if you prefer, you can create your own arrangement more intuitively, keeping symmetry and balance in mind.
If you have a larger clear quartz crystal point, you could set it on the floor just above your head as you lay down so that it rests close to your crown. In this way, it can get to work as a supercharger, amplifying the energies of the crystals at work nearby.
Step 5: Relax and unwind.
Allow the stones to rest in place for 10 to 15 minutes while you stay mindful of your intention and the energies you are manifesting and working with. After you are finished with your stones, be sure to clear and cleanse them before you use them again.
