My candles are packed away for the summer, and it's the perfect time to break out a room spray. The thought of lighting a candle when it’s so hot and humid outside is less than appealing, but heavy, humid air has a way of feeling stale without a little scent. We've done sprays for spring, winter and the holidays, but here are some uplifting summer room spray recipes to keep your home smelling fresh even when it's hot outside.
3 Summer Essential Oil Room Sprays
There are just some scents that scream summer. Orange and lilac remind me of an afternoon picnic, while bergamot and lemon smell like fresh laundry at my grandma’s house. Just a whiff brings back summers from my childhood that I'm more than happy to relive. And the easiest way to bring those scents indoors is with room sprays.
All you need are essential oils, water and witch hazel to make any room smell like summer in bottle. Just mix everything in a pretty decorative spritzer bottle and pop in a few fresh or dried flowers for looks. You’ll want to leave these pretties sitting on your counter, coffee table, nightstand – anywhere that might need a sunny scent boost throughout the day.
When it comes to essential oil blends, I’m not an expert. I believe that scents are a personal preference and the best blends come from experimentation. Don’t be afraid to play with combos, ratios and new oils you haven’t tried before. And if I use an oil you don’t have, simply swap it out for something you do have. These recipes are here to get you started but you can (and should) tweak them however works best for you.
Here’s how to make a few of my favorite summery blends.
Mojito
What's better than summer in a bottle? A mojito in a bottle, that's what. A combo of lime, grapefruit and mint makes your whole house smell fresh and fruity.
-2 parts water
-1 part witch hazel
-5 drops grapefruit oil
-12 drops lime oil
-5 drops mint oil
Fill a 16-ounce glass spritzer bottle ⅔ of the way with water. Top off the rest of the way with witch hazel then add essential oils. Screw the top on and shake to blend to the oils.
Island Breeze
As much as I don't like extra heat in the summer, I still love warm, spicy scents like ginger and sandalwood. Especially when combined with sweet orange oil, they becoming energizing as opposed to overpowering.
-15 drops sweet orange oil
-7 drops ginger oil
-10 drops sandalwood oil
-2 parts water
-1 part witch hazel
Fill a 16-ounce glass spritzer bottle ⅔ of the way with water. Top off the rest of the way with witch hazel then add essential oils. Screw the top on and shake to blend to the oils.
Summer Sun
This fresh lemony scent is another sweet + spicy combo. Thanks to lemon, orange, myrrh and cypress this spray gives any room a bright, outdoorsy kick.
-10 drops lemon oil
-5 drops orange oil
-3 drops cypress oil
-5 drops myrrh oil
-2 parts water
-1 part witch hazel
Fill a 16-ounce glass spritzer bottle ⅔ of the way with water. Top off the rest of the way with witch hazel then add essential oils. Screw the top on and shake to blend to the oils.

Making your own room spray is easy and affordable, and allows you to create a refreshing scent that aligns with your mood and preferences. You will need:
- A spray bottle (preferably glass)

- Sweet orange essential oil
- Lemon essential oil
- Bergamot essential oil
- Vanilla essential oil
Instructions:
- Fill your spray bottle with distilled water, leaving some space at the top.

- Add 10-15 drops of sweet orange essential oil, 5-7 drops of lemon essential oil, 3-5 drops of bergamot essential oil, and 1-2 drops of vanilla essential oil. You can adjust the amount of each oil based on your preference and the size of your bottle.

- Test your room spray by spritzing a small amount into the air. If the scent is too strong or weak, you can adjust it by adding more or less essential oils or water.
- Store your room spray in a cool, dark place to help it last longer.
Tips:
- You can experiment with different essential oil combinations to create your own unique blend.
- Always use a glass spray bottle to avoid harmful chemicals that can leach from plastic.
- To extend the shelf life of your room spray, add a few drops of rubbing alcohol or use alcohol-free witch hazel.
- Tap water may contain impurities that can affect the scent of your room spray. Using distilled water will ensure a pure and fresh scent.
- Use your room spray to create a positive mood, freshen up linens, or as an alternative to chemical-filled air fresheners.
