Short days, gray skies and cold temps can start to feel depressing this time of year. After the hustle and bustle of the holidays it’s easy to get the winter blues thinking about several more months of dark, dreary weather. It’s enough to make you want to pull up the covers and hibernate till April.
Scent is one of my favorite ways to energize, and a DIY room spray is a quick way to diffuse an aroma. We spritz lavender to help us fall asleep; why not do the same to get us going in the morning? Citrus oils are my go-to mood lifters. Clinique called their citrus perfume Happy for a reason, folks. Spice and woodsy scents make lovely additions to a citrus room spray this time of year.
Here are 5 essential oil blends for an uplifting room mist. First, the basics on making your own room spray. Here’s how we make ours:
Basic DIY Room Spray
Supplies needed
-1.5 ounces distilled water
-1.5 ounces vodka or witch hazel – This is what helps the scent linger longer in the air. Some folks also use rubbing alcohol but I find that it interferes too much with the essential oil scent.
-20-40 drops of favorite essential oil or essential oil blend
–4 ounce spray bottle
Directions
Mix water, oils and vodka in a spray bottle. Shake vigorously and mist rooms throughout your home. Note: many citrus oils are phototoxic so please use your oils safely.
Ready to start your essential oil mixology? These 5 blends all incorporate citrus oils to brighten mood and uplift your spirit.

Can I make it these for commercial use
I love making my own room sprays. Its so nice to be able to tailor the scent to your liking. Reusing old, glass perfume bottles work great for room sprays!
I’ve been wanting to find room sprays I could make with my essential oils! I’m definitely gonna make one of these soon.
This is great! I need to get one of these made up pretty fast.
Love these! I’ve been using similar blends in my diffuser. I’d also recommend patchouli.
