Hydration is key to maintaining healthy skin, and honey is a natural humectant, meaning it locks moisture into the skin. The following 5 homemade honey face masks can be applied weekly to meet your skin’s changing needs, no matter the season. In addition to honey, fresh ingredients like avocado nourish skin, while other ingredients like cream and yogurt provide lactic acid to speed up exfoliation.
1. Cocoa and Cream Mask
Alpha hydroxy acids rapidly exfoliate the skin, revealing fresh, new skin cells while evening out skin tone. There are a lot of products containing AHAs out there today, but natural AHA masks also can be easily created at home with a few fresh ingredients like apples, citrus and dairy.
- 1 tablespoon organic sour cream
- 1 tablespoon organic cocoa powder
- 1 organic egg white
- 1 tablespoon organic honey
Combine the sour cream, cocoa powder, egg white and honey in a bowl. Mix well. Apply to face and neck until mask dries. Rinse with warm water to remove. Continues with normal skincare routine such as moisturizer.
2. Anti-Aging Flaxseed + Honey Mask
Flaxseeds are both high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory, and when combined with honey’s antibacterial properties, this mask is perfect for fighting acne or a deep cleansing exfoliation.
- 2 teaspoons flaxseeds
- 3 teaspoons organic, plain yogurt
- 1 teaspoon organic honey
Soak flaxseeds in hot water. Wait a few minutes for the seeds to absorb the water and become more gel-like in consistency. Add yogurt and honey and mix well. Apply a thin layer to face and neck with facial brush and leave on for 10 to 15 minutes. This is a great hydrating mask – apply and leave on while you take a bath. Simply rinse off the mask when your bath is done. Follow with normal skincare routine.
3. Tightening Egg White Mask
Egg whites are great for oily or aging skin, for tightening and firming skin, and for fighting off fine lines and wrinkles. Raw honey kills bacteria, plumps skin and acts as a humectant, while the citric acid in lemon helps reduce age spots or pigmentation.
- 1 organic egg white
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon raw organic honey
Mix ingredients together in a bowl and apply to face with a facial brush. Let it dry for 15 to 20 minutes, then rinse with warm water and follow with moisturizer.
4. Avocado Honey Mask for Dry Skin
Honey retains moisture and the beneficial oil in avocados treats any dry patches. You can also try this as an overnight sleep mask. Just be sure to put a towel over your pillowcase.
- 1 tablespoon avocado, mashed
- 1 teaspoon organic raw honey
- ½ teaspoon organic heavy cream
Mix avocado, honey and heavy cream until smooth. Or blend in a blender until smooth. Apply the mask to face and neck with facial brush and leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Follow with normal skincare routine.
